Tour overview

Ask us which is the best acclimatization mountain in Ecuador and the answer is Iliniza Norte, 5,126 m (16,817 ft). It is a non-technical peak, suitable for hikers with no previous mountaineering experience – although a certified guide is strongly recommended for safety.

The trip runs in a single day. The drive from Quito to the La Virgen parking area at 3,997 m takes about 1 hour 45. From there it is roughly 5 to 6 hours to the summit and about half that on the way down.

Between the two Iliniza peaks sits the rustic Nuevo Horizontes refuge at 4,746 m, a key rest and acclimatization point. If there is snow on the summit, rope and crampons may be needed on some sections – both are included.

The mountain lies 100 km southwest of Quito, inside the Los Ilinizas Ecological Reserve and next to Cotopaxi National Park, so the climate closely matches what you will meet on the big volcanoes. We run it shared or private, with one ASEGUIM guide per 5 hikers.

Good to know

  • Because at 5,126 m it is high enough to matter, non-technical enough to be accessible, and it sits inside the Los Ilinizas Ecological Reserve next to Cotopaxi National Park - so its climate is very close to what you will meet on the big glaciated volcanoes.

  • No. Iliniza Norte is a non-technical mountain, ideal for hikers with no previous experience. A certified guide is strongly recommended for safety, and if there is snow on the summit, rope and crampons may be required on certain sections.

  • Roughly 5 to 6 hours from the La Virgen parking area at 3,997 m, and about half that time on the descent. The drive from Quito takes around 1 hour 45.

  • One ASEGUIM-certified guide for every 5 hikers. The tour runs shared or private, any day, with a minimum of 2 participants.

  • Yes, the rustic Nuevo Horizontes refuge at 4,746 m (15,570 ft), between the two Iliniza peaks. It is a key point for rest and acclimatization on the way up.

  • Both options are available. If you choose the restaurant lunch, expect a noticeably later return to Machachi and Quito.
